Nawlz (webcomic)

(source: Scott McCloud)

Nawlz has been around for a while, but in case you haven’t seen it yet, it’s pretty much the quintessential experimental webcomic. Weird, dissonant, and relentlessly inventive.

I sometimes joke that my early experiments in webcomics put me in comics’ “lunatic fringe” but it’s nice to know that there are artists like Sutu out there that make my scribblings look tame by comparison. He tells me he may release a graphic novel follow-up including the first chapters on DVD, so I guess all the walls between print and web are tumbling down if a strange beast like Nawlz can cross the line.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rowland points us to MS Paint Adventures and an entirely different sort of experiment with cartoons and interactivity. Simple on its face, but not so much when it sucks you in.

Experiments in any medium are like a blind man tapping about with a cane, finding the shape of his surroundings. His peers, comfortably sitting still on the couch, can dismiss the dead-ends and stubbed toes that result, but every once in a while a vast new room of possibilities opens up.

I’m sitting still myself while working on the graphic novel, but I’m grateful for the sound of tapping all around me.”

Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 1 [Blu-ray]

Back in September 2006 CBS commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Star Trek by going back to the original film and digitally remastering the series for the HD era, cleaning up the images and adding new CGI special effects. Previous HD-DVD & DVD releases were available with only the new. But now thanks to the benefits of Blu-ray, fans have a choice (original or CGI), and can see Trek in 1080p. This is basically the ultimate edition of a beloved classic, whether you’re a purist or like the new CG.

SPLINTER

(here is the BORING box art)

A young couple retreats to the wilderness for a romantic camping weekend, but their idyll is shattered when they are car-jacked by an escaped convict and his girlfriend on the run from the police. Thrown together by chance, no one can imagine the terrifying horror that awaits the two couples at a remote and isolated gas station.

What starts off as a pretty routine terror film morphs into one of the best MONSTER MOVIES in years!
Worth a rental!

Meet The New FREDDY KRUEGER

Jackie Earle Haley

The site: Bloody Disgusting is reporting that we can expect an “official announcement” as early as next week confirming that Jackie Earle Haley is indeed strapping on the pointy glove to play Fred Krueger. For the record, I think this is great casting. Based on WATCHMEN, Haley can do menacing, sinister, and psychotic. Based on LITTLE CHILDREN, the guy can just plain act. A good combo for the Fredster. (No word on whether or not Freddy is still raised by Alice Cooper.)

Hopefully solid confirmation will come though the pipeline soon. Samuel Bayer is to direct the reboot of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in Chicago this summer, working from a screenplay written by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer. The film has a release date of APRIL 16th, 2010.
